Is it too late to flip my grades around for a good college?

My freshman year overall I had a 1.6 GPA. I know that is tremendously terrible. This sophomore(1st semester) I had a 2.4. That is still bad. I procrastinate a lot and can't seem to get in tune. I take all CPA classes and one CP. This next year, I'm going to be my band captain and taking AP courses. And I am in interact club. I know it doesn't sound good so far. But what are my chances of getting in The University of Georgia if I get a 4.0 GPA for now on and get involved in more activities? Any advice on what I should do in my situation?

Question applies to ages: 15, 16, 17, 18

avatarAnonymous The first thing you'll want to do is look at the Admissions web site for the University of Georgia:

www.admissions.uga.edu/6_fy_adm_criteria.html

There, you'll see that UGA has a core curriculum-- classes you must take in order to be considered for admission. The site also says UGA will give extra weight to grades in AP classes, and it says grades in high school are the most important factor in their decision.

Based on what the Web site says, it's certainly possible for you to be admitted to Georgia-- it's clear they value good grades, so try and bring your grades up now, especially in academic subjects.

You also want to bring your grades up and improve your study habits now, no matter what college you go to. One of the biggest transitions to college is meeting deadlines; since most college classes don't meet every day, it's really up to you to make sure you're doing the reading and completing assignments. There's no time like now to begin practicing these vital skills-- and since these skills will bring your grades up, you'll be improving your chances of admission at all colleges, including UGA. If for some reason you aren't admitted to UGA as a freshman, remember you can transfer there as well-- provided your college grades are strong-- and that depends again on study skills...

I definitely don't think it's too late to turn your grades and overall academic success around. In fact, if you're successful, I think colleges will really be impressed at your major grade shift. This will show them that you're ready to be serious and focused. I can't promise that you'll get in the University of Georgia because I have no control over that but if you really want it and work hard, I think you have a great chance of being a student there.
