I wanted to be the person who had the right answer and I didn’t care whether it was cool. You don’t worry about what anybody else says about you. You don’t worry about that teacher who you think is not treating you fairly or what your friends are saying. All that matters is where you are and where you want to be. ~First Lady Michelle Obama

How do you deal with having to leave all the ones you love to go to college?

I am planning on going to a college away from home for a better education. But how do I deal with having to leave everyone I love, including the guy I have been with for a year and a half?

This is tough and painful and unavoidable. Clearly you know that you need to do this in order to get the education you deserve. One way to ease the pain of the separation is to have clear plans for when you can come home (or they can come to see you). You may have to save up some extra money to pay for these trips, but just having a set date will help everyone feel better.
You will cry a lot and learn a lot. But you CAN stay close to your loved ones with a little determination and email!

I have to be honest -- I went through the same feelings when I went away to college. My college was 7 hours away from home, and all my family and friends (including my boyfriend). I think what helped me the most was just knowing that I was going to a really good school and getting a great education. You could find out if other kids from your high school or home town are going to the same college. It's comforting to know someone from your same area when you go to a new place. Maybe get to know those kids a little better before you leave so you can see them regularly when you are at college. Of course, you will also meet many new friends, but you can still keep in touch with your old friends and family through e-mail, texting and the phone.
