Does tutoring children--even your own--in social studies or world history sound dull? Try introducing Leonardo da Vinci for some intriguing education after school. Leonardo da Vinci is best known for his work as an artist. "The Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper" have become icons of great talent.
But did you know that painting wasn't Leonardo's only passion? He was the original Renaissance Man.
Da Vinci actually held several jobs during his lifetime. Take a deep breath -- here they are: artist, scientist, engineer, architect, mathematician, geologist, astronomer, musician and inventor. He worked for the military designing weapons and was ahead of his time, drawing things like an "underwater breathing device" that he would not reveal plans for in case men used it in war.
Da Vinci's work in anatomy and his dissections of the human body paved the way for amazingly accurate diagrams and calculations, especially in a time when preserving cadavers for study was unheard of.
Did you know that he invented the scissors? Encourage your kids to explore their creative ideas, and use da Vinci as an example that art can be a part of many other subjects.
Check out more of Leonardo's inventions and studies. Read about the mystery of the Mona Lisa and decide for yourself. Was it really a self-portrait? We bet you'll be amazed. Your kids will, too!
