Halloween can be a spook-tacular event for your children. To ensure your little goblins stay injury free on the "scariest" night of the year, follow these rules and family ideas for a safe evening.

  • Children should be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult who will keep the children in sight at all times.
  • Allow trick-or-treating in familiar neighborhoods only, and those homes with a porch light on or welcome sign.
  • Warn children not to consume any of the treats before they get home where all candy will be inspected to assure it’s safely sealed and hasn’t been tampered with.
  • Choose costumes that are “flame resistant” and masks that allow for full visibility and for your child to breathe freely. All fabrics should be night reflective and short enough to prevent tripping.
  • Decorate or trim all costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights.
  • Give trick-or-treaters flashlights, so they can see better and be seen more clearly.
  • Children should always use the “buddy system” and never go into homes.
