Here are some family ideas for family home activities. These activities address issues parents mention again and again: helping kids use time wisely and discussing  family rules respectfully.

Activity for Upper Elementary Schoolers

Q: How can I help my children get into the habit of using their time wisely?

A:Time the day. With your children, write down your estimates for how long it takes to do certain tasks. Examples might include getting ready for school or work in the morning and preparing a meal. Use a clock to time one of these tasks. Then take turns timing each other. To add more fun, turn on the stereo and do the job to music. Fun family activities like this help the work get done  faster, too.

Then talk to children about the importance of being on time. Mention at least two places you and your child must get to on time regularly, perhaps to school or to a job. Explain what  you do to make sure you are on time and ask for your children's suggestions.

Activity for Middle Schoolers

Q: How can I get my children to respect rules and disagree respectfully?

A:Listen to each other. Choose a family rule that causes frequent arguments. For example, the rule might be about how and when homework gets done. Ask your children to come up with at least two reasons for the rule. Then ask for two reasons against the rule.

Play "What would you do if you were a parent?" and "What would you do If you were a teacher?" Role playing can help both adults and children empathize and explain their points of view to each other. Consider the reasons for the differences among parents, teachers, and children. What are points of agreement, if any? Can anyone suggest a reasonable compromise?
