Right around the ages of 13 or 14, we started letting my daughter wear make-up to school. She was having issues with acne and the make-up helped give her confidence and make her feel better about herself. Of course, I made sure she knew how to properly apply it and what colors were good for her so that her make-up was always tastefully done. It also encouraged her to have a regular morning routine. If she wanted enough time to do her make-up in the morning, then she couldn't keep hitting the snooze.

It depends on the maturity level of the girl and what other social pressures they are getting. I'd say age 13 is a good time to start.

Heather, this is a complicated question if only because our society has been turning girls into women way before it is healthy. If we were thinking appropriate, I'd say late middle-school years. You can start slow with a sheer lip gloss - It's going to be tough holding your daughter to standards that are contrary to our society's messages. My advice as a therapist who works with adolescents - try to find a middle ground otherwise they get sneaky and just change their clothes and put makeup on at a friend's house.
