Are You Supporting Your Child's Middle School Learning?
You’re not in school anymore, so why do you need to be an expert on middle school study skills? Because your guidance and support will help your child succeed at middle and high school academics. Take our quiz to see if you’re on the right track.
Did you skip a question?
Please answer the question(s) marked in red.
1) When does my child do homework?
At about the same time every day, at a spot we have designated for student homework
Wherever there’s a clear spot to put books; sometimes in front of the TV
What homework?
2) How often does my child lose homework assignments or forget to give me papers that need my signature?
Rarely. We set up an organizational system before school started, so my child rarely loses homework assignments or forgets to get my signature
Occasionally. My child needs to be reminded to check a backpack and keep papers organized
Too often. Papers go into a backpack and are never seen again, by the teacher or me
3) What can I tell when I look over the notes my child took in class?
I get a good idea of what the teacher discussed. I can use the notes to quiz my child on the material
I have a hard time figuring out my child’s notes; he or she either tries to write down every word the teacher said or has so few words jotted down that they are meaningless
The only notes my child writes are the ones intended to pass to a friend
4) What do I do when my child has a big project to complete?
I let my child take the lead, but I ask questions to help focus on what’s important. I also make sure I’m available to drive to the library or to a classmate’s house for a group meeting
I plan every step of the project and make sure my child stays on track. If necessary, I even do some of the work myself
I hated big projects when I was a kid. I’ve grumbled about them so much my child knows better than to ask me for help
