Is She Teasing or Bullying?

Teasing and bullying are similar, and sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between the two. Read each scenario and then decide whether you think the situation is considered teasing or bullying.

1) Eight-year-old Maria pushed her best friend, Julie, down at recess. Both girls laughed about it, but the teacher was surprised at Maria’s actions because this had never happened before.

2) Sarah’s mom gave her $25 for lunch money, but three days later, Sarah needed more money. The same thing happened the week before, and Sarah’s mom thought she was just going through a growth spurt. But, two weeks in a row? When she questioned Sarah about it, Sarah finally confessed that one of the “popular” girls was forcing Sarah to give up her lunch money every day “or else.”

3) Jenny loves to talk to other girls on-line. She used to talk to her friend Rachel all the time, but now every time she tries to talk to Rachel, she never gets any response. Jenny knows that Rachel is on-line because she can see that Rachel is talking to several other girls.

4) Anna and Lauren live next door to each other and hang in the same group at school. They usually get along, but once in a while Lauren will comment on Anna’s hair or clothes, and it’s not always nice. Anna told another friend in their group that it bothered her, and that friend told Lauren about it. Lauren apologized to Anna and told her she was only kidding. Anna hopes it won’t happen again.
