Being a writer can be a wonderfully fulfilling and enjoyable career. Like any career, it does require a lot of hard work and a great deal of skills.

On one hand, your question could be a math one. How long would it take to type a manuscript? Well, if you have about 500 words per page, you're going to have about 100,000 words. If you type 50 words per minute, it will take a little less than 33 1/2 hours to type the manuscript.

However, if you're talking about how long it would take to write a book, that answer is going to be much different and is going to depend on your skills, your subject, and the type of writing you're wanting to do.

Last year, a friend and I finished a 435-page textbook. Together, it took us 18 months from start to finish.

Some fiction writers write a book a year while other professional writers might take 10 years to finish a book.

Expect that your first book is going to take longer than subsequent ones and always, always, always, plan time for rewriting and editing. While you don't need to worry about spelling and punctuation the first time through, you definitely do before you send it to a publisher or an editor if you want to be taken seriously.

While writing is an art, it is also a craft. The better you can get at the craft, the better your art will be. So take advantage of opportunities to improve the mechanics of writing: spelling, grammar, proper word use, capitalization, punctuation, etc. You'll be glad that you did.

Have a great time writing your book. I wish you success!
