my 4 1/2 old boy does not eat breakfast, but eats well for other meals. Is this a phase?

It very well could be a phase. Most things children do that concern us are. It could just be that your son is not a breakfast person, some of us aren't. If that is the case, with breakfast being the most important meal of the day, you must be up to the challenge of finding ways to encourage him to eat SOMETHING before doing whatever it is he likes to do in the morning.

The important thing is to make sure that this doesn't become a battle of the wills between the two of you. If you continue to force him to do something he doesn't want to do to being with, it is only going to become harder on you. If you ask your son what he wants to eat and he tells you he doesn't want anything, I bet he changes his mind pretty quickly when you ask him to help you prepare something. And if that doesn't work, don't give up.
