Are there any free reading programs??

My son's first grade teacher want's to hold him back in school because he is not up to par with his reading. I am not going to allow it because he is not failing. He has a C in reading and has A's and B's in everything else, but I am concerned about him struggling next year. We don't have the money to pay for any programs like Sylvan or a private tutor, so I was wondering if any one knew of any free programs. His teacher did not know of any.

Question applies to ages: 6

Americorp often has reading tutoring services for young children. On their website, the Michigan contact info is listed as: Paula L. Kaiser Vandam, Michigan Dept of Education, Phone: 517-373-1376 and email kaiserp@michigan.gov This contact heads up their "Learn and Serve America School Based K-12 programs" and should be able to tell you if your child can be tutored locally.

You can also work with your child on his reading skills. Read to him daily, using your finger to point out the words you're reading, and ask him to read a sentence here and there. (OK, now you read the next sentence to me.) Make it a fun experience, and chose stories that are of definite interest to him. When you're out in public, ask him to read signs to you that are age-appropriate words for him to read. Go to the local library and ask for suggestions for 1st-grade reading level and have your son pick the stories he wants to read.

Find out what teaching method is used in your son's school, such as phonics, and see if his teacher will lend you information on teaching reading the way they teach it.

You're being a good mom to deal with this right away and not let him fall behind in his reading skills! Good luck to you both!
