why my child was retained but in special for two yrs prior

my child has been in "special ed" for three yrs now, since 8th grade. They retained her in the 9th grade. She is now in the 10th grade. Someone please help me. I over heard her school pysocolgist say, "that the money is good for the school" They are labeling her and it is wrong. she has excelled since and has passed algebra with an 87 and has orchestrated by herself, the first step team ever in the history of the school and has been approved. She don't have a grade under 80 and is in all "regular" classes. However, still labelled as "special ed". I don't want her diploma to have this on it. Because I feel it will haunt her. She has lately been getting depressed because of it and want to quit school or move, but moving is not an option. In fact I'd rather her quit. I hate that school

Question applies to ages: 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. But it's great to see how she has continued to use her leadership gifts and is doing well in her classes.

I wonder if your daughter might be both gifted and have some special learning needs. Many students are smart about a lot of things, but have a learning disability in one area of their life that causes them to trip up and needs special attention.

This article talks a little about that and what Dr. Mel Levine calls "Output Failure."

In some schools, your child would still receive a standard diploma as long as she passes the standard requirements. But each school is different. To know for sure, ask your school exactly what her diploma and her transcript will say about this.

Netta, I spoke with several people for help with your issue and here was the general consensus. You need to set up a meeting with the school psychologist and the principal and find out what you need to do to have her "special ed" status removed. You can request to have her reevaluated also.

A special ed teacher in Michigan said that the state of Michigan does allow you to refuse special education services if you wish. He also said that if your daughter receives credit in all her classes, her diploma will say nothing of her "special ed" status.

Just remember to not give up, a retired special ed teacher from Michigan also said that if you want to, you can bring an advocate with you to the meeting to make sure you are being treated fairly. CAUSE is an advocate group that assists parents of students of special needs. Here is their website: www.causeonline.org/. This is just for the state of Michigan, but I'm sure they can connect you with the same kind of help in your state.
