Wow this is such a difficult question, since you never really know if a child is going to like a toy until they actually play with it, it is almost impossible to determine the "best" toy. I guess I would say that the best toy is something that encourages a child's imagination and creativity.

My youngest daughter loves baby dolls. She carries them around everywhere. They even have their own little car seats to ride in when we go somewhere. My oldest son loved dinosaurs when he was that age. He wanted to know everything there was to know about them and owned hundreds of dino toys. My youngest son loves baseball, so he is always trying to find someone to play it with him and will spend hours doing so. My oldest daughter is a teen now, but really loved to play "tea set" when she was younger.

Like I said, you just never know what kind of personality your child will develop. I really encourage everyone to choose toys that do NOT do everything FOR the child, but DO allow him to think for himself. That's really the best gift you can give your child.

ZooTycoon has been popular around our house. It's the PC video game where you create and manage your own zoo. I'm amazed at how much my son gets into it. The best part is he's learning all kinds of math, business and biology skills while he's at it.

My 5-year-old daughter's favorite toy is her grocery cart. She puts her baby dolls or stuffed animals in the seat and takes them "shopping" around the house, chatting with them about what she is buying and why. Other times, she uses the cart to transport smaller toys from her room to the living room or the kitchen. And other times, she's a chef shopping for ingredients for some great recipe she is going to make.

This simple toy gives her hours of enjoyment and it gives me hours of enjoyment, too, watching and listening to her wonderful imagination at work.
