I worked in high tech for 20 years and generally, software engineers are the higher-paid. But don't think just about income potential - either one is a good choice for that. Your son should choose a career that he wants to spend his days doing, has some passion about, and will be challenged and interested in. Most studies about job satisfaction rarely list "salary" as the first in importance. If he follows his interest, passion, and excitement about a career, he'll most likely succeed in it and the money will follow!
