The web site of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (www.opted.org) has lots of information about optometry schools and preparation for getting into one of them. (There are only 20 schools of optometry in the U.S. and Puerto Rico).

Before beginning the four-year optometry program, though, you need to have an undergraduate degree, preferably as a science major or a pre-professional degree program for health care professionals. You could get this kind of education at any four-year college. Your program should include a variety of science courses (biology, chemistry, physics, microbiology), lab experiences, mathematics, and humanities courses.

Your high school guidance counselor may be able to provide you with direction. The Optometry School web site can also answer many of your questions.
