Fatima--at age 11, your body is getting ready to go through a lot of big changes, and proper nutrition is going to be very important. Don't try any fad diets or any program that wants you to cut out any one food group. All food groups are important and are essential for good health. Many girls get a bit heavier as they enter puberty, because of all of the work that your body will be doing as it grows and changes during the next few years.

Because of your age, the best thing for you to do is to ask your parent to take you to the pediatrician and let them know that you want to lose weight and be healthy. Your doctor, working with your parent, can help you set up a program to take the pounds off slowly and sensibly.

A couple of things that you can begin to do now are:
find ways to get more activity into your day, whether that's trying a sport, going for a walk with your family after supper, playing games on Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution (you can really work up a sweat with some of those), going swimming, or even walking to and from school if you live close enough. Then ask your parent to buy you some healthy snacks from the grocery store. You want to look for whole grains, fruits and veggies, and lean protein. Lean string cheese and an apple is a great after-school snack, or hummus and whole-grain pita bread. Baby carrots dipped in peanut butter--yum! Also, drink less soda pop and juice and more water. This is very important for a healthy body.

I applaud you for wanting to get to a healthy weight. Only your doctor can tell you whether that means losing 50 pounds or 30 pounds. (I put in your age and an estimated height 4'11" into a children's weight calculator and it suggested that 105 would be an ideal weight, which would mean losing 40 pounds, not 50. If you are taller or shorter than that, those numbers would be different.)

Again, don't just take my advice. Have your parent take you to the doctor and work with them on the proper program for a pre-teen girl. Good luck!
