That's a tough question, because I really think it depends on the 13-year-old in question. How responsible is the child? Where is the child going that he or she needs a curfew? Are there other adults present? What time does school start the next day? Is the child showing signs of being tired during the day?

When I was growing up, I never had a curfew. The time I needed to be home would be set based on where I was going and what I was going to be doing. More often, I was simply asked what time I was going to be home and expected to keep to that unless I called beforehand with an explanation. I was treated with respect so I returned the respect and returned when I said I would.

My husband came from a larger family and the curfew was the same for all the kids at various ages. There was a curfew for school nights and a curfew for weekends.

It really does depend on what works for your family, what is working for the child, and what time is going to work out best to help your child be most successful.
