I've never personally taken the SAT but i've taken the ACT twice and I've never really studied for it. It's a test that's not designed to determine what you know but what your problem solving skills are like. So, really the best way to study for the ACT is take it more than once. The hardest thing to get used to is budgeting your time. Reviewing subjects like grammar and math in some of the ACT prep books is helpful but it's nearly impossible to study for the science section. Also, simply immersing yourself in a variety of literature will help prepare you for the the reading section.
