How often do parents discover, sometimes with mortification, that under stress they begin to sound just like their own mother or father? ... When we are perplexed, or confronted, by challenging parenting situations, it can be fruitful to ask ourselves: 'what was happening to me at the age that my child is now?' ~Robin Grill

What laws do we have to require schools to take care of our special needs children?

I have a daughter who is non-verbal and non amblatory. I have been trying to find her a Kindergarden. I am finding that the classrooms for special needs children are half the size of my "typical" childrens room. Which require as least the same amount of space, due to their equiptment . I am being told, "we get whatever room is left" Is there a law that states, what the school is required to provide these children?

Question applies to ages: 5, 6

My guess is that the laws are less specific than dictating the number of square feet that must be in a classroom. You might start looking into this at michigan.gov/mde but probably somewhat faster/easier would be to call you school's district's main office, and find out what rules they must operate under. As with everything in this economy, schools have had to cut back in all areas, not just for special needs kids, and it's awfully hard everyone involved - parents, kids, and teachers.
