My son had the same problem last year when he started high school. His grades took a drop, but then by the end of the year he had pulled them up, and this year as a sophomore, he's back on top of his grades.

Freshman year of high school is a big transition. Don't be afraid to ask for help from a teacher or counselor. They can help you to pinpoint exactly where you are having trouble. For my son, it was homework and "bellwork," the little problems that teachers have you do while they're taking attendance. In middle school, those didn't matter so much; in high school, they do. Because he didn't take them seriously, he either didn't turn in his homework or do the bellwork. They may have only been 4 point assignments, but all those zeros sent his GPA plunging.

Try to figure out what's giving you trouble. Is it homework? Is it essay questions on tests? Is it in-class participation? Does the teacher goes through material too fast? Once you figure it out, you can work on fixing it. The fact that you're asking the question shows me that you are motivated to do well and you'll be back on top by the end of the school year.

High school is SO different from middle school, and a lot of good students get thrown off-balance their Freshman year. Don't panic! Talk to the teachers of the subjects you're finding difficult and ask them for some tips on how to take better notes in class, so that you have something to study from when tests come up. Talk to the school counselor to see if there is a tutor/mentoring program in your school, where an older student can show you the ropes. Ask your parents to help you organize a place for you to study every night, and schedule your workload so that you don't get overwhelmed at the last minute.
Also check out the Student Library here on this site; there's a Guide for study skills. Good luck!
