I have a 10-year-old son and I have to confess that the very idea of him having a girlfriend causes me minor chest pains. He's simply not socially ready or emotionally mature enough to handle that kind of relationship. He is friends with girls and he's had crushes on girls whom he says makes his heart beat faster, but that's as far as it goes at this point.

Your daughter is special all on her own. She doesn't need a boyfriend nor does she need to narrow her friendships down to the sort of exclusive relationship that having a boyfriend implies. Encourage her instead to make many friends, friends with whom she can laugh and have a good time.

She has an entire lifetime to involve herself in romantic relationships. Let her save her childhood for being a child. Let her spend this time learning how to socially interact with people so that her future relationships will be healthier and more secure. Encourage her to learn about as many people as possible by developing strong friendships and caring about those around her rather than looking for someone who will pay her special attention in an exclusive relationship.

avatarAnonymous At the young age of 10, children just are not mature enough emotionally to be "dating." Encouraging children that young to have boyfriends and girlfriends really isn't healthy parenting.

I see that you are on here as a parent (the blue outline around your picture). I'm just wondering how, as a parent, you would condone a 10-year-old having a boyfriend? Also, how does a 10-year-old even use another 10-year-old? How does a 10-year-old even know what being "used" means?

Perhaps if you gave me more information this whole situation might make more sense, but right now, this question just makes me angry to even read. Please help me to better understand.
