EduGuide asked professors at Michigan’s AlbionCollege for the inside scoop on success. When asked the question, “What makes a student successful in your classes?” professors from a range of academic disciplines offered up wise and helpful advice that every college freshman should read – and follow!
Here, Dr. Cliff Harris tells students they have to know what they know and what they don't know to get ahead. It's not as easy as it sounds. Honest self-evaluation is hard work.
Advice from a Chemistry Professor
“Most importantly - learn how to evaluate the breadth and depth of your own knowledge. Students should know how they did on any exam when finished because they should have a clear idea of what the material is, how much of it they knew and how well.
This comes by organizing knowledge into related categories so that it can be understood as parts of a whole, then looking for weaknesses in that whole. Those weaknesses can then addressed by further study that is guided and informed by self-evaluation.”
