Young children thrive in a world where they are nurtured and loved. Grandparents can be just the people to create such a world. Grandparents often have more time to spend and they can enjoy children for who they are at the moment.
Children form beliefs about themselves early in life and grandparents can make sure kids grow up feeling safe, secure and lovable.
Here are some ways parents and grandparents can strengthen the bond between generations:
- Allow the intergenerational bond to bloom early. When children and grandparents create their own special relationship, they set up strong connections for the future.
- Be there! Research shows a link between higher child development test scores and infants whose grandparents had greater amounts of family contact.
- Shower your grandkids with attention and affection.Feeling special is the No. 1 ingredient young children need to develop their minds, emotions and social skills. In fact, studies show that grandmothers can play a key role in a young child's social development.
- Offer unconditional love. Grandparents can help children feel accepted, just as they are. That patient, unconditional love can help children learn to trust others, become more independent and take initiative.
- Be a good listener.Make sure your grandchildren know they can come to you and confide in you. Grandparents have the power to encourage a troubled or confused child.
- Play with your grandchildren. Children learn best when those close to them join in their play and exploration. Grandparents have the freedom to play without the worries parents face. Make the most of this freedom and create a magical world of unhurried play and boundless imagination.
- Have fun together. Share the joys of telling stories, reading books, building with blocks or exploring a park. Simple activities shared together can enrich a child's life.
- Share your interests, skills and hobbies. Grandparents can be very patient, effective teachers. The knowledge they pass on will last a lifetime.
- Share traditions. Grandparents can provide the link between cultural heritage and present day customs. Giving children roots in the past helps them feel as if they belong to something special. Traditions offer stability and provide families with a sense of who they are.
Whether grandparents live nearby or far away, they can play a vital role in child development and can sweeten our children's lives. Make the most of this wonderful resource, and enrich each family member's life.
