Almost all children, including infant babies, fear strangers and separation at some point. This comes up frequently with daycare providers, babysitters and preschool teachers. So when should parents be concerned that this may not be normal baby behavior?

It might be time to seek help:

  • If your child doesn't calm down within 10 minutes after you've gone.
  • If the baby separation anxiety continues for weeks.
  • If your child worries to the point of sickness (refusing to play or sleep away from home).

If not addressed, the problem could continue through childhood, adolescence and even adulthood.
