In light of child substance abuse concerns, public school policy typically includes the following medication-related rules:
- It is illegal for any student to have or use medication in school (with two exceptions named below).
- Students who use asthma inhalers must be allowed to carry them and self-medicate for optimal health in school. The principal must notify the teacher about the inhaler.
- Students may carry a one-day supply of medicine and self-medicate only if they have permission signed by a parent and a physician. The permission slip must be recorded in the school office and carried by the student.
- Two people must witness the administration of medications in school unless one is a licensed registered nurse.
- Parents or medical professionals must prepare school staff to administer medications at school.
