Learning to write involves more than learning to form the letters of the alphabet. Children have to learn to handle pencils, pens, crayons and markers before they can form letters. Children start by scribbling and gradually learn the difference between pictures and written words. Did you know learning to read and write happens together? Preschoolers begin to understand that writing is just "talk written down." Family home actitivites that involve your child in meaningful writing build her understanding of print help get her ready for preschool.

What You Need

Markers or crayons and 3"x5" cards or self-sticking notes.

Let's Go!

You and your child can use cards or note paper to label the places you store your child's things. For example, you may keep your child's books on a certain shelf. Make a label for that shelf-either by drawing a picture of a book or by writing the word "book" her own way. If they already know some letters, then write the word for them to copy, or spell the word for them while they write.

ALL of these ways are OK. Remember, the goal is to support your blossoming writer as she grows through the stages of learning to write.
