What are some family home activities parents can do during the summer to help their children remember what they've learned or prepare for better performance during the next school year? Family ideas include the following.
- Find out what your child will be expected to master next year and start practicing now.
- Visit the school; find out who the teacher is and what he expects of students.
- Visit a library and encourage your child to read.
- Have your child write letters, stories, poems or even chore lists.
- Monitor TV viewing. Encourage them to go outdoors and play. Fresh air and exercise increase blood flow and allow the child to remain healthy.
- Encourage your child to ask questions and solve problems.
- Take the time to listen to your children and talk with them about everything.
- Think about summer school or a K12 grades tutor if your child is far behind others.
- Plan family learning activities and talk about them. Visit planetariums, science exhibits, historic sites, and banks; play games with your child at home, in the car and while waiting in lines.
Remind your kids that every year is a new chance to do their best. No matter how they have struggled before or fallen behind, each September presents a fresh beginning.
They can only improve, however, if they have the tools with which to work. If you suspect that your child's lacking fundamental skills like reading, math skills or writing, seek through tutors, homeschooling networks or libraries to equip him or her for a new beginning.
If you suspect your child's assigned school or teacher doesn't have the skill or resources to effectively teach your child, make plans now to make changes or supplement the instruction your child receives.
