As you set off on outdoor adventures, why not plan to bring some of the fun and the learning indoors upon your return? For example, while you explore, collect some of the many nature objects just waiting to be discovered and use them for toddler crafts and fun family activities.
Then Use the Following Family Ideas to Jump-start Your Child's Imagination:
- Start a nature journal—you will need plain paper, assorted drawing materials and objects found during your exploration. Using nature as a springboard, have your child make bark and leaf rubbings or draw pictures of insects and animals he saw. Put it together as a keepsake of your journey.
- Build a pine cone bird feeder—Cover a large pinecone with peanut butter and then roll it in birdseed. Tie a piece of yarn or string to the top and hang the feeder in a tree that can be viewed easily from indoors.
- Create a bird book—To extend the activity, watch the birds that come to eat and begin a bird journal. Encourage your children to draw the birds they see, and then write a description nearby. If they aren’t writing yet, let them dictate the description while you write. You can even check out a bird book from your local library. Help your children identify the birds in their journal, recording the names for each.
- Sort and Match—Collect shells, rocks, stones—whatever your child fancies. Then sort by color, texture, shape or size. While sorting, discuss the properties of each and group them together. Ask your child to describe the groups he’s formed. Use descriptive words like smooth, rough, bumpy, soft, saying them aloud so your child can make the association.
