If you have even one day a month free when school is in session, offer at least one hour of your time to help in the school office, in a classroom, or as a guest speaker. Educators are always trying to promote parent involvement. Schools have all sorts of community service opportunities. Here are some ideas:
- Do you work? The school-to-work program is always looking for individuals who are willing to share the details of their careers. Why not be one of them?
- Are you in the health field? Talk to the school nurse and find out how to can help with the vast responsibilities there.
- Are you a business person? Contact the head of the Business Education department and offer to come in once during the year. No matter what the business, your information will provide real applications for students.
- Do you havea hobby that lends itself to an art class or a historical presentation?
- Have you travelled to countries that are being studied in a geography class? Parents' stories can bring learning to life.
Regardless of whether you have information that is valuable for a class unit or simply have time to help with mundane chores, your parent involvement in education will be welcomed.
