When infant babies feel calm and happy, it is easier for them to learn and grow. Our job--and our joy--as parents is to share happiness, comfort and affection with our children. By letting our children know that they are safe, cared-for and loved, we give them a self-esteem "booster shot." The pleasure and security babies get from these expressions of love set the stage for learning.
One way to show your fond feelings is to sing to your babies. Newborns love lullabies, nursery rhymes, even commercial jingles. When you have a baby to calm, you can take that opportunity to convey your special feelings for your child if sung in the proper spirit. Just smile and sing out!
What You Need to Calm a Baby:
Time with just you and your child
Let's Go!
When calming baby, hold her comfortably so she can see your face. Smile into her eyes and sing this song:
(To the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
Baby, baby, you are mine
And I love you all the time.
In the morning, in the night
In the dark or when it's bright
Baby, baby, you are mine
And I'll love you, rain or shine.
Better still, make up your own special song.
