Five tips to help manage homework.

  • Apply the "ten-minute rule." Ten minutes of homework per night multiplied by grade level. A second grader gets 20 minutes, 60 for a sixth grade student.
  • Is your child easily distracted when doing homework? This may be a signal that the assignment is too long. Break big assignments up into smaller parts that feel more do-able.Talk to the teacher about the assignment if you have serious concerns about its length.
  • Pay attention to complaints about too much homework. If necessary break homework assignments into two parts, with a break in between.
  • Share the ten minute rule, with your child's teachers.
  • Prepare a special time and quiet place for completing assignments. Help your child gather everything he needs to complete the assignment before he starts.
