Preschoolers can be happy travelers when their minds are busy. You can find all kinds of travel games at the toy store, or you can invent your own "on the road." Here is a game that will boost your child's reading skills. Play it on any trip--short or long, and make your travel with toddlers and preschoolers a time for learning.
What You Need
- Pictures of common road signs, business signs and billboards. Examples: fast-food restaurant logos, gas stations or traffic signs.
- Paper and pencil, crayons or markers
Let's Go!
Give your child pictures of the signs you might see on your trip. (You can draw these or cut them out from popular magazines.) Ask your child to look for these signs along the way.
When he sees one of the signs, his job is to draw a picture of the sign or copy the words from the sign on his paper. (If you're moving when he spots the sign, he can use your photo to guide his drawing.)
At the end of the day, he can make a booklet from his "collection." Use the booklet to talk about how he spent his day of travel.
